Terms of Service

These terms apply when you use HomeBasisLedger. They are written to be read, not to be skipped. Using the service means you accept them.

What HomeBasisLedger is

It is a filing cabinet. You record what you paid for your home and what you have spent improving it, attach the receipts, and we keep the running total so the record exists when you need it.

What HomeBasisLedger is not

It is not tax advice, and we are not your tax professional. This matters more here than in most software, so read this bit properly:

• Whether a given expense actually adds to your cost basis is a question of tax law and of your circumstances. The IRS treats improvements differently from repairs, and the line between them is not always obvious. The app records the category you choose; it does not decide whether you chose correctly.
• The totals shown are arithmetic on the numbers you entered. They are not a tax return, not a filing, and not a professional opinion of what you owe.
• What you ultimately pay depends on your filing status, your exclusion, your rate, your state, and facts we know nothing about.
• Before you rely on any of this at tax time, talk to a qualified tax professional. Bring the records — that is what they are for.

Your account

You need an account, you must be at least 18, and the details you give us should be accurate. Keep your password to yourself; anything done through your account is treated as done by you. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has got in.

Your records are yours

Everything you put in — your homes, your improvements, your receipts — remains yours. You give us permission to store and process it for the single purpose of providing the service back to you. That permission ends when you delete the content or your account. We do not claim ownership, we do not sell it, and we do not use it to advertise to you.

Accurate records are your responsibility

We do not verify what you enter. We do not check that a receipt matches an improvement, that a cost is real, or that a date is right. The record is only as good as what you put into it, and its usefulness at tax time depends entirely on that.

Acceptable use

• Do not use the service for anything unlawful.
• Do not upload anything you do not have the right to upload, or anything containing malware.
• Do not try to reach other people’s records, probe the service’s security, or disrupt it for anyone else.
• Do not resell or repackage the service as your own.

Availability

We aim to keep HomeBasisLedger running and your records safe, but we do not promise uninterrupted availability. The service may be unavailable during maintenance, or because something upstream of us has broken. Keep your own copies of anything you cannot afford to lose — your receipts are original documents, and this should not be their only home.

No warranty

The service is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will produce any particular tax result. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranties to be excluded, in which case this section applies to you only as far as the law permits.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, HomeBasisLedger is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for lost profits, lost data, or any tax, penalty, or interest assessed against you. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Ending things

You can stop using the service and delete your account whenever you like. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, or where we must for legal reasons. If we close your account without cause, we will give you a reasonable chance to take your records with you.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service changes. We will change the date at the top, and for anything significant we will tell you rather than edit quietly. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the updated terms.
